Four Matador Student-Athletes Named to MPSF All-Academic team

Woodland, Calif. - Not only have Renee Gargiulo, Kirra Kylander, Kristin McLaughlin and Jillian Stapf enjoyed success in the sport of water polo at Cal State Northridge, but this quartet of players has enjoyed success in the classroom.

Because of their success as student-athletes, Gargiulo, Kylander, McLaughlin and Stapf have been named to the 2008 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Women's Water Polo Academic All-Conference team.

The team is based on a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, at least a sophomore academically, have competed one full academic year at the institution prior to the season, and the student-athlete must have competed in 50 percent or more of the institution's competition.

Below are the accomplishments of these student-athletes in 2008.

Renee Gargiulo, Sophomore, Driver, Clovis, Ca.
Named to the 2008 All-MPSF Academic team ... Fifth on the team in goals scored with 21 ... Scored a season-high three goals in a 11-10 overtime victory over Indiana (3/11/08) and against UC Santa Barbara (4/19/08) ... Scored two goals against UC Santa Barbara (2/24/08), at California (3/22/08) and against San Diego State (4/13/08) ... Led the team in steals with 46.

Kirra Kylander, Sophomore, Driver, Murrieta, Ca
Named to the 2008 All-MPSF Academic team ... Tallied 19 goals, sixth- best on the team ... Her 37 steals was second-best on the Matadors ... Scored a season-high two goals in games against Cal State Bakersfield, Fresno Pacific, UC Davis, Bucknell and UC Irvine ... Has 73 assists in two seasons at CSUN, seventh-best in school history ... Named to the 2008 CSUN Academic Honor Roll.

Kristin McLaughlin, Sophomore, Utility, La Canada, Ca
Named to the 2008 All-MPSF Academic team ... Reached double figures in goal with 16, seventh-best on the Matadors ... Tallied a season-high three goals in the season opener against Cal State Bakersfield (2/3/08) ... Scored two goals in games against Bucknell (3/13/08), later in the season against Cal State Bakersfield (3/29/08) and at Arizona State (4/12/08) ... Second on the team in steals with 37 ... Her 83 career steals in two seasons is eighth-best in school history.

Jillian Stapf, Sophomore, Goalkeeper, Hudsonville, Mi.
Named to the 2008 MPSF All-Academic team ... Named to the CSUN Academic Honor Roll ... One of the top goalkeepers in the nation ... Finished with 287 saves (9.26 spg) in 2008, third-best in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) ... Her 287 saves is third-best for a single season in school history ... Gained MPSF Player of the Week honors with 34 saves in two games in the same day against Cal State San Bernardino and UC Santa Barbara ... The date was 4/19/08 ... Her 20 saves against Cal State San Bernardino tied her career-high originally set last season against UCSB ... Tallied ten or more saves in 14 games, including the last five games of the season ... Now has 623 career saves in two seasons at CSUN, and only 148 short of tying the CSUN mark ... Tallied ten or more saves in 14 games, including the last five games of the season ... Now has 623 career saves in two seasons at CSUN, second-best in school history, and only 138 short of tying the CSUN mark.
