April 28, 2010

Irvine, Calif. - The post-season honors for the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team are starting to pour in.

On Wednesday afternoon, senior goalkeeper Jillian Stapf capped off an outstanding career at Cal State Northridge with her selection as the 2010 Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Year.

Stapf was the leader of a Cal State Northridge team which won a single-season school record 28 games (28-8). Stapf led the Big West in goals against average (6.64) and ranked third in saves per game (10.22). Stapf also helped the Matadors yield a conference-low 6.47 goals per contest to opposing teams. Her efforts in the cage also helped CSUN achieve a program record national ranking of ninth earlier this year, the highest ranking in school history. Stapf finished her career with a school record 1,302 saves and played a key role in CSUN winning back-to-back Big West co-regular season championships.

In addition to Stapf being named the league's Water Polo Player of the Year, Whitney Delgado, Sydney Sonoda and Stapf were named first team All-Big West Conference; and Kristin McLaughlin and Alison Pierce were named Honorable Mention All-BWC.
