Long Beach, Calif. - One of the goals of the 2010 Cal State Northridge women's water polo team was to win the Big West Tournament.
The Matadors will now get that opportunity this weekend (April 23-25) at the Big West Conference Tournament at the 49er Campus Pool at Long Beach State.
Cal State Northridge and Pacific were co-champions of the regular season with identical 4-1 records, but an 8-7 "sudden victory" decision by the Tigers over the Matadors last weekend gave UOP the #1 seed. Cal State Northridge is the #2 seed.
Cal State Northridge and Pacific will receive a first round bye. The Matadors will face either third-seed UC Santa Barbara (17-10, 3-2 BWC) or sixth-seed Long Beach State (8-19, 0-5 BWC) on Saturday at 5:45 p.m. The UCSB-LBS winner will meet in a first round game on Friday (4/23/10) at 5:45 p.m.
Pacific (22-9, 4-1 BWC) will face the winner of the game between fourth-seed UC Irvine (12-14, 3-2 BWC) and fifth-seed UC Davis (15-16, 1-4 BWC) also on Saturday (4/24/10) at 4:00 p.m. UC Irvine and UC Davis will meet on Friday (4/23/10) at 4:00 p.m.

On Feb. 7 at the UCSD Invitational, Sydney Sonoda and Kirra Kylander each scored two goals to lead the Matadors to an 8-3 victory over the Gauchos. Jillian Stapf had a season-high 16 saves. Then on Feb. 28 at the UC Irvine Invitational, Whitney Delgado, Alison Pierce and Sonoda each scored two goals as CSUN posted a 10-6 verdict over UCSB. Then in a Big West contest on April 10 at UCSB, the Matadors scored a 7-6 victory as Delgado scored three goals. Stapf had 14 saves.
If Cal State Northridge plays Long Beach State in the semifinals (4/24/10, 5:45 p.m.), the two teams have played each other once this year with the Matadors posting an 11-4 victory in a Big West game played at CSUN's Matador Pool. Heidi Pettinger led the CSUN attack with three goals while Delgado chipped in with two goals.
UC Irvine is the defending champion, winning the inaugural Big West Women's Water Polo Tournament on the University of the Pacific campus in 2009. Cal State Northridge was the top seed after winning the regular season title, but was upset in the semifinals by UC Santa Barbara in a "sudden victory" game, 6-5.
