Northridge, Calif. - This is certainly a big weekend for the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team.
The Matadors, winners of seven straight games, travel to UC Irvine on Saturday (4/16/11, Noon) and Long Beach State on Sunday (4/17/11, Noon) in a pair of Big West Conference games.
Cal State Northridge, ranked 14th in the nation, resides in first place in the conference with a 3-0 record. Two of their conference wins were by one goal, a 14-13 decision over UC Davis (4/2/11) in the conference opener and an 8-7 verdict over UC Santa Barbara (4/9/11). The other conference win was an 11-9 victory over Pacific (4/3/11).
CSUN could wrap up the #1 seed for the 2011 Big West Tournament with a win at UC Irvine. CSUN is currently 3-0 in league competition while the Anteaters are 2-0. UCI would wrest away the favorite's role with a win over the Matadors. The Matadors claimed co-regular season championships in 2009 and 2010 when they finished with a 4-1 conference record.
UC Irvine, ranked tenth in the nation, is 16-8 overall and 2-0 in the conference, one-half game of first place Cal State Northridge. The Anteaters feature a balanced attack with freshman Danielle Warde scoring 39 goals while sophomore Jessy Cardey has 38 goals. UCI's other top scorers include Cortney Collyer and Caitlin Haskell each with 29 goals. Lauren Davis ranks fourth in the conference with 115 saves (10.08 spg) for UC Irvine. Long Beach State, ranked 19th in the nation, is 11-14 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The 49ers host UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (4/16/11) before CSUN's arrival on Sunday at Noon.
Scoring Saga ... Seven CSUN players are scoring in double-figures ... Three of those players are among the Top 5 scorers in the Big West Conference ... Whitney Delgado, who led the conference in scoring last year with a school record 80 goals, is again the conference leader this year with 70 ...
