Northridge, Calif. - For the second time this season, a Cal State Northridge water polo player has been named Big West Player of the Week.
Alison Pierce, a junior from Citrus Heights, Ca., scored two goals in a 10-6 win over UC Santa Barbara (4/4/09). Pierce had an insurance goal late in the fourth period to preserve the Big West Conference win. Pierce also drew four exclusions, had two five-meter shots and one assist. Later in the day, Pierce drew three exclusions to help CSUN to a 12-6 non-league victory over Cal Baptist.
For her efforts, Pierce, who has scored 19 goals this year, has been named Big West Player of the Week.
Earlier this season, Sydney Sonoda scored nine goals at the Cal Lutheran Invitational to earn Big West Player of the Week honors.
Saturday, 12th-ranked Cal State Northridge (16-14, 2-1 Big West) returns to action with a Big West Conference game at 16th-ranked Long Beach State. The game gets underway at noon.
Senior Jessica Coy continues to lead the Matadors in scoring with 50 goals. Her scoring totals this year are fourth-best (1.67 gpg) in the Big West Conference. Tara McGinley and freshman Whitney Delgado are ninth and tenth, respectively, in the conference in scoring with 32 goals (1.07 gpg) and 30 (1.00 gpg).
In four seasons at Cal State Northridge, Coy has scored 156 goals, third-best in school history.
Jillian Stapf is averaging a league-leading 11.57 saves per game. In two-plus seasons at Cal State Northridge, Stapf's 320 saves are approaching her school record of 348 saves set two seasons ago as a freshman. Stapf has collected a school record 943 career saves.
