Irvine, Calif. - Kristin McLaughlin's three goals and four steals against UC Irvine (4/2/10) and another goal the following day at top-ranked USC (4/3/10) has earned the her Big West Water Polo Player of the Week honors.
McLaughlin becomes the fourth Matador water polo player to win such an accolade. Earlier this year, the Big West named Jillian Stapf, Heidi Pettinger and Whitney Delgado as Water Polo Players of the Week.
McLaughlin's hat trick and career-high against the Anteaters propelled the Matadors to an important 11-9 double overtime league verdict. The victory upped CSUN's Big West Conference record to 2-0. McLaughlin added four steals, two assists and a field block in helping the Matadors extend their winning streak to a season-high ten straight games.
McLaughlin's goal with seven seconds remaining in the third period tied the score at 6-6 against UC Irvine. McLaughlin added an insurance goal in the first overtime to make the score 11-8 in favor of Cal State Northridge.
McLaughlin, who finished the week with a goal against #1 USC (4/3/10), has scored 16 goals this season. McLaughlin leads the team in assists (34), steals (32) and field blocks (14).
Earlier this year, McLaughlin was among 16 student-athletes named Big West Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
