Tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge Hosts Long Beach State in Big West opener

Northridge, Calif. - Finally, no more weekend tournaments.
Just one-on-one league competition as the tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team opens Big West Conference competition against rival Long Beach State on Saturday (3/27/10) at Noon at Matador Pool.
The Matadors, the defending Big West regular season champion, have won eight games in a row to increase their season record to 19-5. A victory over Long Beach State would give Cal State Northridge its third 20-win season in the nine-year history of Cal State Northridge water polo. During the 2003 campaign, Cal State Northridge was 24-8. Last year, the Matadors were 20-16.
Long Beach State has won three games in a row to raise its season record to 7-12.
Cal State Northridge continues to maintain its #10 national ranking, according to this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association poll find ... It is the fourth straight week CSUN has been ranked tenth in the country ... Pac-10 schools continue to be the elite collegiate water polo teams in the country ... Five Pac-10 schools are ranked in the Top 10 led by #1 USC, #2 Stanford, #3 California, #4 and five-time defending NCAA champion UCLA, and seventh-ranked Arizona State ... Hawai'i is ranked fifth, while San Jose State is sixth, Michigan is eighth, and Loyola Marymount sits in the ninth position ... Other Big West schools ranked in the national Top-10 besides tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge are UC Santa Barbara (12th), UC Irvine (13th), UC Davis (15th) and Pacific (17th).
Cal State Northridge has the #1 defense in the Big West Conference ... The Matadors have given up only 6.13 goals per game ... CSUN's offense is second-best in the conference at 10.38 gpg ... Pacific is the league leader at 11.86 goals per game ... Jillian Stapf, the senior All-American, is the league leader in giving up only 6.30 goals per game ... Her 9.94 saves per game is second-best in the BWC behind UCSB's Ruth Milne at 10.77 spg ... Three CSUN players are among the top five scorers in the Big West Conference ... Super sophomore Whitney Delgado has 51 goals, second-best in the Big West Conference behind Jasmine Myles of Pacific with 56 ... Alison Pierce is fourth with 36 goals while Sydney Sonoda has 31 goals, fifth-best in the league.
Four Cal State Northridge players find themselves fighting for a spot in the school record Top 10 for career goals ... Sophomore Whitney Delgado (2009-) is seventh all-time in scoring with 86 goals ... Senior Kirra Kylander (2007-) has 84 career goals, good for eighth place in the record book ... Junior Chelsea Curran (2007-) has 79 career goals which is tenth all-time in school history while Sydney Sonoda (2008-) is eleventh all-time in career goals with 78 ... Senior Kristin McLaughlin (2007-) will end her four-year CSUN career ranked in the school record book Top-10 in career steals (178, #3) and career assists (113, #4) ... Another senior, Kirra Kylander (2007-) is third all-time in career assists (129) ... Senior Renee Gagiulo (2007-) is seventh all-time in career steals (113) and eight all-time in career assists (90) ... Senior All-American Jillian Stapf continues to improve on her career saves school record ... Stapf's 164 saves (#9 for a single season) this year gives her 1,186 for her four-year career.
Whitney Delgado continues to produce great offensive statistics ... Only a sophomore, Delgado has a team-leading 51 goals which is the most number of single season goals since the 2007 season when Allison Brookes tallied 62 goals ... The school record for single season goals is certainly within reach for Delgado ... The school record is 74 by Chari Christopher during the 2005 season ... Delgado has 86 career goals in less than two seasons at Cal State Northridge which is seventh-best in school history ... Delgado tallied 35 goals in 36 games last year, and this year her 51 goals have been produced in just 23 games ... Delgado has scored at least one goal in 22 of the 23 games she has played ... At the Cal Lutheran Invitational, Delgado produced a career-high six goals against seventh-ranked Arizona State. ... For her efforts (13 goals in four games at the Cal Lutheran Invitational), Delgado was voted Big West Water Polo Player of the Week ... It is the second such honor for a Matador player this year ... Earlier this year, senior All-American Jillian Stapf gained Big West Player of the Week accolades ... Delgado `s 51 goals are second-best in the Big West Conference behind Pacific's Jasmine Myles who has 56.
The 2010 varsity will not face only Long Beach State in the Big West opener (3/27/10, Noon), but later in the day (3 p.m.), the current Matadors will face a group of former players in the annual alumni game ... The list of old timers include Allison Brookes, Dayna Van Gorder, Heather Van Hemert, Jessica Coy, Christine Cruz and Tara McGinley ... It will be interesting to see what water polo skills the alumni team still possesses after many of them enjoyed outstanding careers at Cal State Northridge ... Brookes (2005-08) is CSUN's all-time leading scorer with 222 goals ... Coy (2006-09) enjoyed a spectacular CSUN career with 162 career goals, third-best in school history ... Coy is the career school record holder with 221 assists while Brookes is sixth with 106 ... Cruz (2005-07) is sixth all-time in scoring with 104 goals while Van Gorder (2007-08) is eighth all-time with 84 goals.
Kirra Kylander's team-leading 46 assists this year are eighth-best for a single season in school history ... Whitney Delgado is not only a scoring machine, but she is second on the Matadors in assists (24) and fourth in steals (21) ... Kristin McLaughlin is enjoying a triple double-double season with a team-leading 26 steals, 29 assists and eleven goals ... Ten CSUN players have scored at least eleven goals this year ... Cal State Northridge is quick to grab the lead in games ... In the first period alone, the Matadors have outscored the opposition (75-to-36), and enjoy a 68-to-27 goal margin in the second period. ... Reserve goalkeeper Nicole Concialdi is getting a chance to play... Concialdi tallied 38 saves in four games at the recent Cal Lutheran Invitational ... Concialdi started the last three games ...
