Cal State Northridge Water Polo Drops Two Games At UC Irvine Invitational
Irvine, Ca - The 17th-ranked Cal State Northridge water polo team continues play on Sunday at the UC Irvine Invitational with a 10:30 a.m. game against UC Santa Barbara at Corona Del Mar High School.
The winner of the CSUN-UCSB match will play the winner of the UC San Diego-Michigan game at 4:00 p.m. for 13th place in the 16-team tournament.
It was a rough first day of action on Saturday for the Matadors. For the second straight week, CSUN had to face top-ranked and three-time defending NCAA champion UCLA. Last week at CSUN, the Bruins scored a 10-5 victory, and on Saturday in the first game of the UC Irvine Invitational, UCLA recorded a 12-4 decision. UCLA raced to a 3-1 first period lead, and extended the lead throughout the contest.
Dayna Van Gorder tallied twice for Cal State Northridge while
Kirra Kylander and
Renee Gargiulo added a goal each.
In the second game of the day, it was the identical score, 12-4, only this time a loss to eighth-ranked Arizona State. The Sun Devils jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first period and then outscored the Matadors 8-3 the rest of the way to clinch the victory.
