Cal State Northridge Splits Two Matches at UCSD Water Polo Invitational

La Jolla, Ca - The first day of action on Saturday at the UCSD Triton Invitational saw the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team earn a split of the two games.

In the opening round of play, the Matadors pushed their season record to 3-0 with a 7-6 victory over 19th-ranked Santa Clara. Allison Brookes scored three goals to lead the Matador attack. Dayne Van Gorder scored twice.

The victory over Santa Clara earned the Matadors a winners bracket game later in the day against the sixth-ranked San Diego State Aztecs. The competition proved to be much tougher as the Aztecs handed the Matadors their first loss of the season, 11-6. Chelsea Curran paced the CSUN attack with three goals.

San Diego State marched to a 2-0 first period lead, only to have the Matadors storm back with four second period goals compared to two more goals for the Aztecs to make the score, 4-4, at halftime.

However, the Aztecs outscored CSUN 7-2 in the second half. Five of the Aztecs goals came in the third period.

Cal State Northridge will continue play on Sunday at 8 a.m. against UC Davis. The Aggies beat Redlands, 18-5, in their opening game, but later lost to UC Santa Barbara, 8-6. The CSUN-UCD winner will face the winner of the UC San Diego/Long Beach State game at 2:15 p.m. for fifth place in the tournament.
