Nationally-ranked CSUN Women's Water Polo Team Travels To UCSD Triton Invitational
Northridge, Ca - The nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team takes its unbeaten record to the UC San Diego Invitational this weekend where eleven of the 16 teams are ranked in the pre-season Top 20.

The top teams include #18 Cal State Northridge, #6 San Diego State, #8 UC San Diego, #9 UC Irvine, #10 Hartwick, #12 Loyola Marymount, #13 Long Beach State, #15 UC San Diego, #17 UC Santa Barbara, #19, Santa Clara and #20 Maryland,

The Matadors, 2-0, open play on Saturday (Feb. 9) at 10:15 a.m. against #19 Santa Clara. The winner of the game at 3:30 p.m. against the winner of the game between #6 San Diego State or #20 Maryland.

The tournament continues on Sunday with two more games for the Matadors. Second day pairings will be determined by the first day results.

Cal State Northridge is off to a fast start in 2008. At last weekend's Cal State Bakersfield Invitational, the Matadors scored an impressive 13-7 decision over Cal State Bakersfield and followed up with an 18-2 thrashing of Fresno Pacific.

A balanced attack featuring six different scorers propelled the Matadors to the season-opening win over the Roadrunners. All-American Allison Brookes, Jessica Coy and Kristin McLaughlin each scored three goals while Kirra Kylander added a pair of goals in the six-point win over the host Roadrunners. Cal State Northridge jumped to a 3-1 first period lead, and increased the margin to three goals at halftime, 6-3. Cal State Northridge added seven more goals in the second half.

In the second game of the day, a 16-point win over Fresno Pacific, Courtney Hudgins led a brigade of Matador scorers with three goals. Bethany Scamara, Brookes, Kylander and Tara McGinley each added a pair of goals. The Matadors jumped to a 6-2 lead in the first period. The CSUN defense didn't allow another goal the rest of the game, while the CSUN offense added 12 more goals in the next three periods.

In the two games, 15 different Northridge players scored at least one goal. Brookes led the CSUN attack with five goals while Kylander and Coy chipped in with four each. McLaughlin and Hudgins each collected three goals.

Jillian Stapf recorded 14 saves in goal that included 13 against Cal State Bakersfield. Nicole Concialdi also saw action in goal and collected three saves against Fresno Pacific.

Matador Moment ...
All-American Allison Brookes etched her name into the Matador record book last weekend at the Cal State Bakersfield ... With five goals scored (3 against Cal State Bakersfield. 2 vs Fresno Pacific), Brookes now has 178 for her career which breaks the school career goal record of 177 set by Chari Christopher (2003-05) ... Brookes, a senior from San Diego, began her Matador career in 2005 with 39 goals and followed up with 72 goals in 2006, and 62 last year ... Cal State Northridge opens the 2008 home season on Saturday, Feb. 16, against top-ranked UCLA. Game time is noon.
