Nationally-Ranked Cal State Northridge Water Polo Team Scores Two Victories To Open 2008 Season
Northridge, Calif. - They are nationally-ranked again in 2008, and they are off to a fast start in 2008.
The Cal State Northridge water polo team, ranked 18th in the pre-season, earned two victories to open the season on Sunday at the Cal State Bakersfield Tournament.
A balanced attack featuring six different scorers propelled the Matadors to a season-opening 13-7 verdict over Cal State Bakersfield. Later in the day, eleven different Matadors scored at least one goal as CSUN dominated play in a 18-2 decision over Fresno Pacific.
In the first game, Jessica Coy and Kristin McLaughlin each scored three goals while Kirra Kylander added a pair of goals in the six-point win over the host Roadrunners. Cal State Northridge jumped to a 3-1 first period lead, and increased the margin to three goals at halftime, 6-3. Cal State Northridge added seven more goals in the second half.
In the second game of the day, a 16-point win over Fresno Pacific, Courtney Hudgins led a brigade of Matador scorers with three goals. Bethany Scamara, All-American Allison Brookes, and Tara McGinley each added a pair of goals. The Matadors jumped to a 6-2 lead in the first period. The CSUN defense didn't allow another goal the rest of the game, while the CSUN offense added 12 more goals in the next three periods.
In the two games, 15 different Northridge players scored at least one goal. Coy scored four goals in the two games while McLaughlin and Courtney Hudgins each collected three goals.
Next Saturday and Sunday, the Matadors travel to La Jolla to compete at the UC San Diego Tournament.
