Cal State Northridge Ends Season With 7-6 Victory Over UC Irvine

April 27, 2008

San Diego Calif. - For the second straight day, the 15th-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team staged an upset. Sunday morning at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Tournament at San Diego State's Aztec Aquaplex, the Matadors avenged an earlier season loss to UCI with a 7-6 victory to claim ninth place in the four-day tournament.

The Matadors were eleventh-seeded in the MPSF Tournament while UCI was seeded eighth. A day earlier, Cal State Northridge upset 12th-ranked Long Beach State 8-7.

Cal State Northridge dented the scoreboard first with a goal in the first period, but UC Irvine scored three straight times to take a 3-1 lead after one period. In the second frame, the Matadors regained the momentum, finding the back of the cage twice to knot the score at 3-3. But 22 seconds later, the Anteaters jumped back ahead to take a 4-3 lead into halftime.

Both teams scored just once in the third period with UCI holding a 5-4 going into the final eight minutes. The Anteaters enjoyed their largest lead of the game at 6-4 with 5:48 left in regulation, but Cal State Northridge scored three unanswered goals in the final 5:21 to complete the comeback.

Allison Brookes, Chelsea Curran and Dayna Van Gorder each scored two goals to pace the Matador attack. Jillian Stapf stopped ten UCI shots.

Cal State Northridge ended the 2008 season with four victories in their last five games to end the year at 14-18.

The future bodes well for the Matadors. Although the Matadors lost all-time leading scorer Allison Brookes (221 goals) to graduation, six of the team's double-digit scorers from this year's squad return in 2009. Brookes was the team's leading scorer this year with 49 goals while fellow senior Dayna Van Gorder tallied 36 goals. However, returning next year are Jessica Coy (39 goals, #2 scorer), Chelsea Curran (36 goals, #3 scorer), Renee Gargiulo (21 goals, #5 scorer), Kirra Kylander (19 goals, #6 scorer), Kristin McLaughlin (16 goals, #7 scorer) and Sydney Sonoda (11 goals, #8 scorer). Also returning his goalkeeper Jillian Stapf, who tallied 287 saves this year, third-best for a single season at Cal State Northridge.
