#15 CSUN Falls To #6 ASU In MPSF Tournament Play

San Diego Calif. - The 15th-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team rallied for a two-goal lead through three periods of play against sixth-ranked Arizona State, but the Sun Devils outscored the Matadors in the fourth period, 4-0, to earn a 10-8 victory over CSUN in the opening round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Tournament game on Friday afternoon at San Diego State University.

The Matadors dropped to 12-18 on the season compared to ASU's 21-10 mark.

Arizona State led from the outset, scoring the game's first three goals before CSUN notched its first goal with 46 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Sun Devils maintained her lead through the second period until the Matadors struck again right before the half, trying the score at 5-5 with less than 60 seconds to play.

In the third quarter, Cal State Northridge took its first lead of the game at 6-5, and took an 8-6 advantage going into the final stanza. Unfortunately for the Matadors, Arizona State turned up the defensive pressure and shut out CSUN while scoring four goals of its own to emerge with the 10-8 victory at the Aztec Aquaplex.

Two-time All-American Allison Brookes, Sydney Sonoda and Dayna Van Gorder each scored two goals for the Matadors who will now play a consolation bracket game on Saturday at 10:20 a.m. against Long Beach State.
