#12 Cal State Northridge Explodes For 17-6 Decision Over Cal State San Bernardino

April 19, 2009

Northridge, Ca. - The 13th-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team exploded for 13 second-half goals to break open a tight game and earn a 17-6 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in the home season finale on Sunday afternoon at Matador Pool.

The Matadors opened a 4-1 first period lead, but the Coyotes outscored CSUN, 2-0, in the second half.

Then the Matador offensive machine went into high gear. After Kaitlin Hartman scored a Cal State San Bernardino goal to tie the game at 4-4 with 6:42 remaining in the third period, the Matadors scored the next ten goals. Three of the goals were scored by Kirra Kylander.

Nine different Matadors scored goals in the largest offensive out of the 2009 season. Tara McGinley scored three goals while Kristin McLaughlin, Jessica Coy, Alison Pierce and Sydney Sonoda each added a pair of goals.

The victory raised CSUN's season record to 20-14. It is the second time in the eight-year existence of CSUN women's water polo that the team has achieved a 20-win season.

Next week, the Matadors will compete at the Big West Championship (April 24-26) at the Chris Kjeldsen Pool Complex at the University of Pacific. Because Cal State Northridge, UC Irvine and UC Davis all shared the conference regular season title, a coin toss on Sunday morning determined the top three seeds. Cal State Northridge won the top seed followed by UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Pacific and Long Beach State.

Because Cal State Northridge earned the top seed, the Matadors have a first round bye during the first day of competition on Friday (4/26). CSUN will play on Saturday (4:00 p.m.) against the winner of Friday's game between fourth-seed UC Santa Barbara and fifth-seed Pacific.

The Big West Conference championship game is slated for Sunday (4/26) at 3:45 p.m.

Cal State Northridge Earns 11-4 Decision over Sonoma State

Northridge, Calif. - Earlier on Sunday, goalkeeper Jillian Stapf set a single season school record to help lead the 13th-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team to an 11-4 victory over Sonoma State in a non-league game at Matador Pool.
