Irvine, Calif. - Tenth-ranked UC Irvine and 14th-ranked Cal State Northridge played an intense, close match from start-to-finish on a warm Saturday afternoon with the Anteaters prevailing in a 9-8 verdict in a key Big West Conference women's water polo match at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
A Matador victory would have secured the #1 seed in the upcoming Big West Tournament (April 29-May 1) at UC Santa Barbara. However, UC Irvine moved to the top of the league standings with a 3-0 league record while Cal State Northridge fell into a second place tie with UC Santa Barbara at 3-1. The Gauchos edged Long Beach State, 8-7, in another Big West game on Saturday afternoon.
The Matadors still could secure the top seed at the league tournament but they must win at Long Beach State on Sunday (4/17/11, Noon) while UC Irvine must lose its final two games. UCI hosts UCSB on Sunday, and plays at Long Beach State next Thursday (4/21/11).
UC Irvine struck first at 5:46 of the first period on a goal by Danielle Warde, the top freshman scorer in the Big West Conference. Not only did Warde score UC Irvine's first goal, but she later added three more goals to give her a team-leading 43 goals.
Cal State Northridge would tie the game later in the first period at 1-1 when Whitney Delgado lobbed the ball off the far post of the Anteater net.
Warde again scored later in the first period to make it 2-1 in favor or UC Irvine, but back came Cal State Northridge with a power play goal by Sydney Sonoda to end the first period with the score tied, 2-2.
Cal State Northridge finally moved in front at 3-2 to open the second quarter on a goal by Leah Janke. The Matadors had a chance to extend its one goal lead on a power play but could not convert.
UC Irvine would later tie the game at 3-3 in the second period. Later, Cal State Northridge had another power play opportunity but could not score. The first half ended at 4-4.
The third period proved to be the pivotal point of the game. Two goals gave UC Irvine a 6-4. Cal State Northridge responded with a power play goal by Melissa Doll to make it 6-5, but UCI's Jessy Cardey scored her third and fourth goals of the game to make it 8-5 in favor of UC Irvine. Back came Cal State Northridge on another power play goal by Janke to end the third period. UC Irvine led 8-6.
In the fourth period, Warde scored her fourth goal to give UC Irvine a 9-6 lead. Cal State Northridge refused to quit. Another power play goal by Doll and a rebound goal by Janke cut the Anteater lead to 9-8 late in the game.
With less than eight seconds to play. Cal State Northridge had one last attempt but the shot was knocked away to give the Anteaters the victory.
Dana Harvey collected nine saves for Cal State Northridge.
The loss ended CSUN's seven game winning streak.
