Long Beach, Ca. - Kristin McLaughlin tallied three goals to help lead nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge to its third straight victory of the season, an 8-6 decision at Long Beach State in a Big West Conference game on Saturday afternoon.
Long Beach State jumped on the scoreboard first just three minutes into the game, but the Matadors rallied back with three straight goals (including two by McLaughlin) to take a 3-1 halftime lead.
Back came Long Beach State with two early third period goals to knot the contest at 3-3. Cal State Northridge then rallied back with three straight goals to take a 6-3 lead.
The 49ers then cut the Matador margin to 6-4 with 7:38 remaining in the game, and had a chance to make the game even closer. However, a one-player advantage for Long Beach State turned into a turnover, and a counter attack by Cal State Northridge that resulted in a foul and penalty shot for the 12th-ranked Matadors. McLaughlin converted the penalty shot to make it 7-4.
Tara McGinley added two goals for the Matadors who raised their season record to 17-14 overall and 3-1 in the Big West Conference.
Jillian Stapf, who leads the Big West Conference in saves per game, collected 13 against Long Beach State.
Cal State Northridge returns home on Sunday, April 19, for two games against Sonoma State (10:00 a.m.) and Cal State San Bernardino (4:00 p.m.)
Jillian Stapf's 13 saves against Long Beach State gives her 333 for the season, only 15 short of her school record set two years ago ... Stapf now has a school record 956 career saves in only 2-plus seasons at Cal State Northridge.
