Tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge Overpowered by #1 USC, 18-6
April 3, 2010
Los Angeles, Calif. - The tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team had a chance to face the nation's top-ranked team, USC, in a non-league women's water polo game on Saturday afternoon at McDonald's Swim Stadium, and the Trojans proved again they are head-and-shoulders above their rivals with an 18-6 victory over the Matadors.
The loss ended CSUN's ten-game winning streak and dropped the team record to 21-6.
Any thought the Trojans would be tired after beating 19th-ranked Cal State Bakersfield, 18-4, earlier in the day went for naught.
"I knew USC would bring their `A' game against us," said CSUN head coach Marcelo Leonardi. "USC is a great team."
USC's simply again proved they are the elite women's water polo team in the country with a vast display of talent and experience.
Previous to their wins today over Cal State Northridge and Cal State Bakersfield, USC's had decisive wins over #2 Stanford, #3 California, #4 and five- time defending NCAA champion UCLA, #5 Hawaii, #6 San Jose State, #7 Loyola Marymount, #8 Michigan, #13 UC Irvine, #14 San Diego, and now against #10 Cal State Northridge and #19 Cal State Bakersfield.
USC now possesses a 14-game winning streak to increase its season record to 16-1.
Cal State Northridge held its own through the first period and into the start of the second frame as CSUN closed the score to 5-4 on a 6-on-5 score at the 4:30 mark of the second frame. USC responded with an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach.
USC displayed numerous players with exceptional talent. Nine different Trojan players scored at least one goal. Kristen Dronberger tallied a career-high five goals to lead the Trojans.
CSUN sophomore Whitney Delgado once again displayed she can play against the nation's elite college teams. Delgado led the Matador attack with two goals to give her a team-leading 57 goals for the year.
