Northridge, Calif. - It took two overtimes, but the tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team extended its winning streak to ten games with a dramatic 11-9 double-overtime victory over 13th-ranked UC Irvine in a Big West Conference women's water polo game on Friday afternoon at Matador Pool.
This game took a gutty effort by the Matadors over a gritty UCI team that had only an 9-11 overall record entering the game. Cal State Northridge held a 5-3 halftime lead, but the Anteaters scored three straight goals to take a 6-5 advantage later in the third period. However, a Kristin McLaughlin goal, with seven seconds remaining on the third period clock, tied the game at 6-6.
But back came UC Irvine. With 2:03 remaining on the game clock, Kelsey Klatt fired a goal past CSUN goalkeeper Jillian Stapf to tie the game at 8-8, and move the contest into overtime.
In the first overtime, it was no contest. CSUN's three straight goals gave the home team a lead that UCI got not catch.
Jillian Stapf collected 12 saves.
On Saturday, Cal State Northridge takes its 21-5 record to USC to face the top-ranked Trojans. USC has won 13 games in a row in raising its second record to 15-1. Game time is 2 p.m.
Super sophomore Whitney Delgado continues to be a dominant scorer for the Matadors ... With two more goals today against UC Irvine, Delgado now has a team-leading 55 goals which moves her into fifth place all-time with Jessica Coy (2009) ... Delgado's 55 goals have come in only 25 games played ... Delgado is well within reach of the school record of 74 goals held by Chari Christopher (2005) ... Delgado now has 90 career goals in less than two seasons at Cal State Northridge ... Four assists by Kirra Kylander today against the Anteaters gives her 50 for the season, now fourth-best in school history ... Eleven team assists gives CSUN 256 for the season, second-best in school history, and only 40 assists away from the single season school record set in 2009 ... For Jillian Stapf, her 12 saves today is the eleventh time this season that she has collected double-digit saves in a game ... Stapf now has a school record 1,209 career saves.
