Berkeley, Calif. - The fifth-ranked California Golden Bears broke open a tight match by outscoring 13th ranked Cal State Northridge, 6-1, in the fourth period on the way to a 14-8 victory over the Matadors in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game on Saturday afternoon at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.
After Allison Brookes scored the last two goals of the third period to put the Matadors within one goal, 8-7, California scored the next three goals before CSUN's Renee Gargiulo finally got the Matadors back on the scoreboard with 28 seconds left in the match.
Brookes led the Cal State Northridge attack with four goals while Gargiulo added two goals.
Jillian Stapf collected 12 saves for the Matadors.
On March 29, the Matadors return to action at the Loyola Marymount Mini-Marathon.
