#11 Cal State Northridge Women's Water Polo Edges Princeton, Sonoma State

Westchester, Ca. - The eleventh-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team averted a major upset with a narrow 12-11 decision over Sonoma State on Saturday afternoon at the Loyola Marymount Invitational.

Kirra Kylander scored what proved to be the winning goal with 2:28 to play in the game to give the Matadors a 12-9 lead. However, Sonoma State scored two goals in the final 1:16 to pull to within one goal.

Cal State Northridge jumped to a 3-1 first period lead, but Sonoma State outscored the Matadors, 6-4, in the second period and the first half ended in a 7-7 tie.

Each team scored a goal in the third period, but the Matadors outscored Sonoma State in the final period, 4-3.

Kylander and freshman Heidi Pettinger each scored three goals to lead the Matador attack. Tara McGinley and Jessica Coy each added a pair of goals.

Earlier in the day, Jessica Coy scored four goals, including the game winner in the third period, to lead Cal State Northridge to a 6-5 victory over Princeton.

Princeton jumped to a 3-1 first period lead, but freshman Whitney Delgado keyed a second period Matador rally with two of the team's three goals. Cal State Northridge held Princeton to only one second period goal. Both teams went into halftime tied at 4-4.

Coy, who is the team leader in goals with 37, scored both of CSUN's third period goals to give the Matadors a 6-5 lead. Coy scored the go-ahead and game winning goal at 2:08.

Neither team scored in the final period.

Jillian Stapf recorded ten saves in goal for the Matadors including six in the final period.

Cal State Northridge, 12-12, continues tournament play on Sunday. At 9:40 a.m., the Matadors face the Indiana Hoosier followed by a 1:10 p.m. contest against Cal State Bakersfield.
