Northridge, Calif. - Two more victories on Thursday afternoon now gives the tenth-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team a 17-5 season record.
In the first game of the day, the Matadors easily beat Wagner College, 11-5, and later in the afternoon, Cal State Northridge overmatched Occidental, 16-7.
Sophomore Whitney Delgado continued her offensive domination for the 2010 season. Delgado scored three goals against Wagner to give her 45 for the year. Heidi Pettinger added a trio of goals. In all, the Matadors featured a balanced attack that saw seven players score at least one goal.
The game against Wagner (Staten Island, NY) was not close. Tied at 1-1 after the first period, Cal State Northridge scored five second period goals to take a 6-2 halftime lead, and increased the margin to 9-2 after three periods.
Senior All-American goalkeeper Jillian Stapf collected 16 saves.
In the second game of the day against Occidental, it was no contest from the start as the Matadors raced to a 7-0 first period lead, and extended the margin to 11-0 at halftime.
Delgado added another goal against Oxy to give her 46 for the season. Delgado now has scored at least one goal in 20 of the 21 games she has played this year. Her 46 goals now is approaching the single season Top-10 in goals scored in school history. Erica Bonetti (2003) and Chari Christopher (2004) each reside in tenth place with 50 goals.
In less than two seasons at Cal State Northridge, Delgado has 81 career goals to tie her for eighth place in the career CSUN Top-10 with Kirra Kylander. Dayne Van Gorder resides in seventh place with 84 career goals (2007-08).
Nicole Concialdi started in goal for Cal State Northridge against Occidental and responded with eight saves.
On Wednesday (3/11/10), "NCAA On Campus" was at Cal State Northridge to produce a 30-minute show on the exploits of senior All-American goalkeeper Jillian Stapf and the nationally-ranked Matadors ... The show will air each Monday in May on CBS College Sports at 5:30 p.m. (pt) ... Congratulations to Matador senior standout Kristin McLaughlin, who was honored earlier on Thursday as one of 16 Big West Scholar-Athletes at a breakfast ceremony in Anaheim ... McLaughlin, who is among the career school leaders in scoring, assists and steals, plans on going to law school after graduating this year from CSUN in Political Science ... McLaughlin has already received full scholarship offers from the Baylor Law School and the Michigan State Law School, and is awaiting more scholarship offers from such prestigious schools as Duke, Notre Dame and Duke ... Congratulations, Kristin, for being such a great student-athlete.
