Cal State Northridge Collects Wins over Bucknell, Occidental

Northridge, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's water polo team enjoyed a successful home debut by recording two wins on Wednesday afternoon at Matador Pool.

After playing their first 20 games on the road, the Matadors enjoyed some home cooking as they recorded a 9-6 victory over Bucknell, and later in the day, a 13-7 decision over Occidental.

The Matadors used a balanced scoring attack to withstand the challenge of Bucknell. Seven different Matador players scored at least one goal with Alison Pierce and Heidi Pettinger each scoring two goals.

Cal State Northridge jumped to a 3-2 first period lead and then exploded for four second period goals to only one for the Bisons.

Jillian Stapf collected 15 saves.

In the second game of the day, Sydney Sonoda continued her offensive firepower with three goals to lead the Matadors to a 13-7 nod over Occidental. Sonoda, last weekend at the Cal Lutheran Invitational, scored nine goals in four games. For her efforts at Cal Lutheran, Sonoda is CSUN's nominee for Big West Athlete of the Week.

Sonoda's three goals today gives her 21 for the year. Earlier in the day, Sonoda tallied a goal against Bucknell.

Nine different Matador players scored goals including two by Jessica Coy against Occidental. Coy continues to lead the team in scoring with 31 goals.

Jillian Stapf had 14 saves against Occidental to give her 29 saves in the two games.

The Matadors, winners of five of their last six games, are now 10-12 on the season.

On Saturday and Sunday, Cal State Northridge travels to the Loyola Marymount Invitational. On Saturday, Cal State Northridge faces Princeton at 9:40 a.m. and then Sonoma State at 4:40 p.m. On Sunday, the Matadors faces Indiana at 9:40 a.m. and at 1:10 p.m., the Matadors face Cal State Bakersfield.
