Northridge, Ca. - The 13th ranked Long Beach State women's water polo team broke open a close game with three goals in the fourth period to defeat 14th ranked Cal State Northridge, 7-5, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game on Saturday afternoon at Matador Pool.
With the score tied (4-4) entering the fourth period, the 49ers Kelsie Emerick scored two straight goals at the 7:33 and 6:02 marks. Dayna Wawrzynski added an insurance goal for the 49ers at 4:04 before the Matadors' Jessica Coy scored at 2:47.
The loss dropped Cal State Northridge to 4-9 overall and 0-3 in the conference. Long Beach State evened its overall record at 8-8 and 3-2 in the MPSF.
The Matadors led briefly in the game. After a Lauren Sieprath scored a goal at 6:38 in the first period to give Long Beach State a 1-0 lead, CSUN's Dayne Van Gorder scored at 4:28, and Coy tallied a goal at 2:55 to give the home team a 2-1 lead. However, Branwyn Lee scored for Long Beach State at 1:17 to tie the game at 2-2.
Cal State Northridge hosts the Northridge Mini on Tuesday. At 2:30 p.m., the Matadors plas Indiana, and again at 6:30 p.m. against Occidential. At 4:30 p.m., Indiana faces Occidential.
