Irvine, Calif. - Sydney Sonoda continues to be a dominant scorer for the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team.
Sonoda scored three goals to pace the ninth-ranked Matadors to a 10-6 victory over 14th-ranked UC Santa Barbara during second day play (Sunday morning) at the prestigious UC Irvine Invitational.
In the three games thus far at the UCI Invitational, Sonoda has scored seven goals with one more game later Sunday (1:30 p.m.) against seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount at the Corona Del Mar High School pool. The winner claims ninth-place in the 16-team tournament.
On Saturday, Sonoda scored three goals to help CSUN to a 12-7 victory over UC San Diego. Earlier in the day, Sonoda scored a goal against eighth-ranked Arizona State.
Sonoda now is tied for the scoring leader with Whitney Delgado. Sonoda and Delgado each have 27 goals. Delgado had two goals in the Sunday morning win over UC Santa Barbara.
Balanced scoring helped pave the way to victory against UCSB. Six CSUN players scored at least one goal.
Cal State Northridge broke open a close game outscoring the Gauchos, 4-1, in the second period to take a 7-3 halftime lead. It was 9-4 after three periods.
