CSUN Rolls to 12-7 Victory Over UC San Diego

Irvine, Calif. - Three goals by Sydney Sonoda helped the eighth-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team to a 12-7 victory over UC San Diego during first day action at the prestigious UC Irvine Invitational.

Whitney Delgado, Alison Pierce, Heidi Pettinger and Renee Gargiulo each added a pair of goals to give the Matadors their tenth victory of the season in 13 games.

Senior All-American goalkeeper Jillian Stapf collected 14 saves.

Cal State Northridge jumped o a 4-2 first period lead and raised the lead to 6-2 at halftime. The onslaught continued in the third period as the Matadors outscored the Tritons, 3-1.

Earlier in the day, a 14-4 loss by Cal State Northridge to eighth-ranked Arizona State pushed the Matadors to the consolation bracket.

A four-game outburst by the Sun Devils in the second period led to a 5-1 half-time lead for ASU. The onslaught continued in the next two periods as ASU outscored CSUN, 4-1, in the third period, and 5-1 in the final frame.

Chelsea Curran, Sonoda, Pierce and Pettinger each scored one goal for Cal State Northridge.

Cal State Northridge continues play on Sunday (8:00 a.m.) against UC Santa Barbara at the Corona Del Mar High School pool.
