Irvine, Ca. - A balanced scoring attack led by Kirra Kylander, Renee Gargiulo and Kristin McLaughlin with two goals apiece carried the 14th ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team to a 9-6 upset victory over eleventh-ranked Michigan during first day action at the UC Irvine Invitational at Corona Del Mar High School.
The Matadors jumped to a 3-2 first period lead, and then never trailed.
In the first game of the day, Cal State Northridge dropped a 14-10 decision to third-ranked Hawaii.
The Matadors jumped to a 5-4 first period lead, but Hawaii took an 8-7 halftime lead, and blew the game open in the third period, outscoring CSUN, 4-1.
Coy and McGinley each scored three goals to lead the Cal State Northridge attack.
Tournament action for Cal State Northridge will continue on Sunday at Corona Del Mar High School. The Matadors will face ninth-ranked Loyola Marymount at 9:15 a.m.
