La Jolla, Ca. - The nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team suffered its toughest loss of the young 2009 season, dropping a 6-5 double overtime decision to eighth-ranked Michigan during first day action on Saturday at the UC San Diego Invitational.
The Matadors, ranked 12th in the nation, scored three times in the second period to take a 4-2 halftime lead over the Wolverines.
But the Matadors could only score one time in the second half while Michigan scored three times to send the game into overtime.
In the second overtime, Michigan found the back of the Northridge net with 2:30 left on the clock.
In the first game of the day, the Matadors exploded for six goals in the third period to record a come-from-behind 10-7 victory over 20th-ranked UC Santa Barbara.
Down 4-2 at halftime, and 5-2 with 6:53 remaining in the third period, the Matadors scored three straight times on goals by Renee Gargiulo, Jessica Coy and Kirra Kylander to tie the game. Heidi Pettinger's goal with six seconds left in the third period put Cal State Northridge in front to stay, 8-7.
The CSUN defense also took charge in the second half. UCSB was held scoreless in the fourth period.
Sunday at 9:15 a.m., the Matadors will face UC Irvine. The winner of that game will play again at 2:15 p.m. The loser will play at 1:00 p.m.
