CSUN Water Polo Succeeds in the Classroom

Colorado Springs, Co. –
"Success in the pool. Success in the classroom."

That should be the motto for the nationally-ranked CSUN women's water polo team.

Eight Matador players have been named Academic All-Americans by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

Kelcy Barrott, Kiernan Davis, Melissa Doll, Lindsy Duncan, Molly Henehan, McKenzie Pollei, Taitum Herrington, and Marisa Young gained Academic All-American distinction.

The Academic All-American teams are broken down into three categories; Outstanding (4.00 – 3.71 GPA); Superior (3.70 – 3.41 GPA); Excellent (3.40 – 3.20 GPA).

McKenzie Pollei and Marisa Young earned Outstanding honors. Melissa Doll, Molly Henehan and Taitum Herrington chalked up Superior honors. Kelcy Barrott, Kiernan Davis and Lindsy Duncan earned Excellent honors.

As a team, CSUN chalked up a 3.31 GPA, just behind Harvard University (3.35). The Matadors GPA was ninth-best in the country.

In the pool, CSUN won 23 games and was ranked as high as seventh in the nation.

Kelcy Barrott - 2014 Season
Named an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) ... Played in all 32 games with 20 goals in 41 attempts for a shooting percentage of .488 ... Added 18 steals and ten assists ... Began her CSUN career with three goals in the season opener against Whittier (1/25/14) ... Scored a season-high goals in CSUN's 22-8 victory over Cal Lutheran (3/20/14) ... Scored two or more goals in five games.

Kiernan Davis - 2014 Season
Named Honorable Mention All-Big West Conference … Also named Big West All-Academic ... Also named an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) ... Collected 212 season saves, ninth-best for a single season at Cal State Northridge … Tallied ten or more saves in seven games … Collected a season-high 13 saves against Long Beach State (4/12/14) … In three seasons at Cal State Northridge, she has collected 598 saves, third-best in school history.

Melissa Doll - 2014 Season
Named honorable mention All-Big West Conference … Also named Big West All-Academic ... Also named an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) ... Scored 21 goals along with a shooting percentage of .350 … Scored a season-high three goals against Hawai'i (4/4/14) … Finished second on the team in steals (50) and assists (37) … Finished her four-year career ranked third in field blocks (81), fifth in career assists (140), fifth in career steaks (175), and ninth in career shooting percentage of .375.

Lindsy Duncan - 2014 Season
Earned Honorable Mention All-America honors by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) ... Named second team All-Big West Conference … Also named Big West All-Academic ... Also named an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) ... Scored 51 goals, second-best on the team … Scored at least one goal in 24 of the team's 30 games … Scored a season-high four goals against Cal Baptist (2/1/14) and Azusa Pacific (3/12/14) … In 17 games, she scored two or more goals … Led the team with 49 assists … Third on the squad with 25 field blocks … Finished her four-year Matador career with 211 goals, second-best in school history … Her 211 goals were only eleven short of the school record held by Allison Brookes (222, 2005-08) … Set the school record with 551 career field goal attempts and assists (196) … In the school record book, ranks second in field blocks (85) and seventh in career field goal percentage (.383).

Molly Henehan - 2014 Season
Named Big West All-Academic ... Also named an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) ... Among the team leaders in goals scored (23) … Her shooting percentage of .377 was among the team's best … Scored at least one goal in 15 games … Scored a career-high four goals against UC San Diego (2/23/14) … Also collected three goals against Claremont Mudd-Scripps (3/12/14) and Hartwick (3/23/14).

Taitum Herrington - 2014 Season
Named an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) ... Scored 12 goals in 19 attempts for a shooting percentage of .632 ... Scored a season-high two goals against Occidental (3/2/14) and against Cal Lutheran (3/20/14) ... Added 29 assists, 29 steals and 18 field blocks.

McKenzie Pollei - 2014 Season
Named an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) ... Scored four goals in nine attempts (.444) in 18 games ... Tallied ten assists and seven steals. 

Marisa Young - 2014 Season
Earned third team All-America honors by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) ... Gained first team All-Big West Conference honors for a second straight season … Also named Big West All-Academic ... Named an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPA) ... Led the Big West Conference in scoring with 61 goals … She has led the Matadors in scoring in two of the last three seasons … Scored at least one goal in 23 of the team's 30 games … That included a career-high six goals against Concordia (3/23/14) … Scored five goals in two games … In 16 games, she scored two or more goals … Also led the Matadors in shooting percentage (.462, seventh-best for a single season in school history), field goal attempts (132), field blocks (40) … During her three seasons at Cal State Northridge, she has scored 177 goals, fourth-best in school history, and only 45 goals short of the school record held by Allison Brookes (222 goals, 2005-08) … She has never scored less than 51 goals during her three seasons at CSUN … Ranks third in the school record book in career field goals attempts (441) and career field blocks (84) ... During the summer of 2014, played on the USA Women's Senior National Team that competed at the 2014 FINA Intercontinental Tournament.
