Melissa Doll Earns Big West Water Polo Player of the Week Honors

Northridge, Ca. – The heroics of Cal State Northridge senior Melissa Doll helped her earn Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Week honors.

Trailing 8-7 against ninth-ranked Hawai'i, the Matadors appeared headed for defeat when Doll delivered a gam-tying goal with two seconds to play in regulation. CSUN went onto win, 9-8, in double overtime, and preserved its unbeaten record (2-0) in Big West play.

Doll played a key role throughout the match, scoring three goals to go along with three steals and an assist for the seventh-ranked Matadors. Doll's other goals twice shaved the deficit to two at the end of the second and third quarters.

CSUN is 21-6 overall season. The Matadors host 12th-ranked Long Beach State on Saturday (April 12) and sixth-ranked UC Irvine on Sunday (April 13) in Big West competition. Both games start at noon. Admission is free.

Lindsy Duncan now has possession of two school records and is the current school record holder in a third category … With three assists against Hawai'i (4/2/14), Duncan now has 185 career assists, one better than Lynzy Klein (184, 2004-06)Duncan's name appears throughout the school record book … Duncan is still the current school record holder in field blocks (84) closely followed by Kelcie Ferreira (82)Duncan is second-best all-time in career goals (205), 17 goals behind Allison Brookes (222, 2005-08)Duncan is enjoying another outstanding season with 45 goals (second-best in the conference) and a shooting percentage of .388 (45-for-166) … Marisa Young is the conference leader with 58 goals … As a team, CSUN continues to put sizable dents in the school record book … The Matadors are averaging 12.33 goals per game, currently above the school record of 10.31 gpg set in 2010 … The 23 goals against Whittier (1/25/14) is a school record … CSUN is averaging 11.04 assists per game, well above the school record of 9.64 apg, also set in 2010 … The eleven game winning streak (2/23/14 – 3/29/14) also is a school record.

Cal State Northridge is ranked seventh in the current CWPA (Collegiate Water Polo Association) rankings … All six teams in the Big West Conference are nationally-ranked … UC Irvine is sixth followed by Cal State Northridge (seventh), Hawai'i (ninth), Long Beach State (12th), UC Santa Barbara (15th) and UC Davis (16th).
