Northridge, Ca. – Nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge faces a huge weekend of top water polo competition with two high-powered matches at fourth-ranked California on Saturday (3/29/14, 1:00 pm) and in the Big West Conference opener on Sunday (3/30/14, Noon) at 15th-ranked UC Davis.
CSUN, ranked seventh in the nation, will face one of the nation's elite programs at California. This year, the Golden Bears have chalked up a 16-5 overall record. The wins have included decisions over sixth-ranked UC Irvine twice (12-6 in both games). Cal has a distinct foreign flavor to its 2014 roster. Cal's top three scorers hail from foreign countries. Dora Antal is a freshman from Eger, Hungary. Antal leads Cal in scoring with 56 goals. Antal helped Hungary to the bronze medal match at the London Olympics in 2012. Another freshman, Anna Illes, hails from Budapest, Hungary. Illes has scored 36 goals, second-best on the team. Roser Tarrago is another freshman, who helped lead Spain to the silver medal at the Summer Olympics in London in 2012. Tarrago, who has scored 33 goals, hails from Mataro, Spain.
California has certainly earned its status as one of the elite programs in collegiate women's water polo. In the last three seasons, the Golden Bears have chalked up an 86-28 record and have been ranked third (2010) and fourth (2011, 2012, 2013) during that time.
The other elite schools in collegiate water polo include top-ranked USC (25-0 in 2014, four NCAA titles in 1999, 2004, 2010, 2013), second-ranked UCLA (19-2 in 2014, seven NCAA titles in the 12-year history of NCAA water polo) and third-ranked Stanford (15-1 in 2014, NCAA titles in 2002, 2011, 2012).
Cal State Northridge has certainly earned its ranking of seventh in the national polls this year. The Matadors have won a school record eleven straight games to raise its season mark to 19-5.
The #7 ranking is the highest in the 13-year history of Matador women's water polo.
CSUN is putting a serious dent in the school record book. The Matadors have averaged 12.67 goals per game, currently ahead of the school record of 10.31 gpg in 2010. The 11.17 assists per game, is far better than the school record of 9.64 apg in 2010. The winning percentage of .792 (19-5) is a shade better than the school record of .778 (28-8) in 2010.
Eleven Matador players are scoring double figures. Marisa Young has a team-leading 52 goals followed by Lindsy Duncan (41 goals), Kelcie Ferreira (36 goals), Jenny Jamison (34 goals), Celena Photopulos (23 goals), Molly Henehan (21 goals), Kelcy Barott (19 goals), MacKenzy Fowler (16 goals), Melissa Doll (14 goals), Taitum Herrington (12 goals) and Bianca Adams (10 goals).
Kiernan Davis has recorded 147 saves for an average of 7.56 spg.
