#10 Cal State Northridge Defeats #8 Loyola Marymount at UCI Invitational

Irvine, Ca. – In a defensive game that neither team would give the opposition an inch of pool space, the Cal State Northridge women's water polo team prevailed.

Lindsy Duncan's fourth period goal (inside the left post of the LMU net) with only 2:30 on the clock was the only goal of the period for either team to give the tenth-ranked Matadors a 6-5 victory over eighth-ranked Loyola Marymount on Saturday morning during first round play at the UC Irvine Invitational.

This was an historic game for Cal State Northridge. The win over a higher ranked team (Loyola Marymount at #8) means the Matadors could possibly move higher in the national rankings in school's history. CSUN's current ranking of tenth this year is the highest since the Matadors were ranked ninth (the school's best) during the 2010 season.

Saturday's match against Loyola Marymount was close from start-to-finish. Kelcie Ferreira scored early in the first period to give the Matadors a 1-0 lead. But two LMU goals gave the Lions a 2-1 lead after the first period.

CSUN scored three goals in the second period. Marisa Young scored both goals. Young's second goal gave the Matadors a 4-3 lead, but LMU tied the game on a penalty shot with 50 seconds remaining before halftime.

Young added a hat trick goal in the third period to give CSUN a 5-4 lead. LMU scored with 15 seconds left in the period to tie the game at 5-5.

Duncan's goal was only goal of the fourth period.

Cal State Northridge is 8-3. Loyola Marymount fell to 5-4.

CSUN will face top-ranked and defending NCAA champion at 1:30 pm at the UCI pool. The Trojans opened tournament play with a 21-1 victory over Cal State Bakersfield.
