Buenos Aires, Argentina – The United States Women's Youth National Water Polo Team (18-and-under) capped a perfect run at the UNANA Youth Pan American Championship with a 10-6 victory over Canada to claim the gold medal over the weekend.
CSUN women's water polo head coach Dr. Marcelo Leonardi was a member of the winning USA coaching staff.
"Winning gold and hearing your national anthem being played is always special," said Leonardi, who will be entering his fifth season as head coach at CSUN in 2014. "Helping guide and mold young talented athletes in their first international tournament is exciting. Being part of Team USA is an honor."
Canada led early in the championship game, posting a 3-2 advantage after the first period. Team USA Went ahead 5-4 by halftime and never looked back. Team USA took a 6-4 lead after the third period and then scored four goals in the fourth period.
Earlier in the tournament, Team USA defeated Canada, 9-7.
Other Team USA wins included 22-6 and 23-4 victories over Puerto Rico, 25-3 over Venezuela, 11-7 over Brazil, and 23-1 over Argentina.
During this past summer, Leonardi assumed additional duties as the United States Olympic Development Program (ODP) Girls National Technical Director. Leonardi will oversee the implementation of training for all females in the Olympic Development Program nationwide in addition to competition at the National Training and Selection Camps.
Leonardi has also served as an assistant coach for the USA Women's Junior National team.
In four previous seasons at CSUN, Leonardi has garnered a 91-56 record. In three of those four seasons, the Matadors have won 20 or more games.
