Eleven CSUN Water Polo Players Earn All-American Academic Honors

Northridge, Calif. – "Success in the pool. Success in the classroom."

That should be the motto for the nationally-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team.

Eleven Matador players have been named Academic All-Americans by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC).

Natalie Averell, Kiernan Davis, Melissa Doll, Molly Henehan, Taitum Herrington, Leah Janke, Taryn Kamimoto, Katie Kammer, Megan Kittlitz, Lindsy Nelson and Marisa Young gained Academic All-American distinction.

The Academic All-American teams are broken down into three categories; Outstanding (4.00 – 3.71 GPA); Superior (3.70 – 3.41 GPA); Excellent (3.40 – 3.20).

Marisa Young and Taitum Herrington earned Outstanding honors.

Natalie Averell, Melisa Doll, Molly Henehan, Leah Janke and Taryn Kamimoto gained Superior distinction.

Lindsy Nelson and Megan Kittlitz earned Excellent All-American accolades.

As a team, CSUN had a 3.30 GPA, just behind Harvard University (3.31 GPA), and ahead of Stanford University (3.28 GPA). The Matadors' GPA was eighth-best in the country.

In the pool, CSUN won 23 games to finish the year ranked 14th in the nation. Nelson tallied a team-high 70 goals while Young collected 50 goals. Nelson and Young both gamed All-Big West Conference honors.

Cal State Northridge led all Big West Conference schools with eleven Academic All-American selections followed by Long Beach State (8), Hawai'I (7), UC Santa Barbara (5), San Diego State (4), UC Davis (4) and UC Irvine (4), and Pacific (3) … Melissa Doll, Molly Henehan, Leah Janke and Lindsy Nelson were named Academic All-Americans for a third straight year … Katie Kammer and Marisa Young were named Academic All-Americans for a second straight season.

Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) … Appeared in nine games with a 9.72 saves per game average … Started one game with six saves against Chapman (3/2/13).

#1 Kiernan Davis, Goalkeeper, Sophomore, Redlands, Ca.

Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) … Named an All-Academic selection by the Big West Conference … CSUN's starting goalkeeper … Started 34 games with 289 saves, third-best in the Big West Conference and fourth-best for a single season in school history … Davis averaged 8.89 saves per game … Collected ten saves or more in 12 games … That included a career-high 18 saves against Indiana (3/17/13) … Has 386 career saves, fifth-best in school history.

#1 Megan Kittlitz, Goalkeeper, Freshman, Clovis, Ca.

Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) … Played in three games … Tallied three saves against Occidental (3/14/13).

#5 Lindsy Nelson, Attacker, Junior, Murray, Ut.

Named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for a third straight season … Also named Honorable Mention All-Big West Conference in addition being named to the league's All-Academic team … Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) … Named the Big West Player of the Week for her seven goals in ten attempts against two nationally-ranked teams, #13 UC Davis (3/18/13) and #7 San Diego State (3/9/13) … Against UCD, Nelson recorded three goals to go along with one assist, one steal and one field block … She helped the Matadors pull off the near upset of #7 San Diego State with a game-high four goals (in six attempts) while adding two field blocks, one assist and one steal … CSUN's top scorer with 70 goals (#5 in the BWC and sixth-best for a single season at CSUN) … That included a career game against Sonoma State when she scored seven goals, breaking her personal best of five goals last year against Bucknell, Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State San Bernardino … Nelson's seven goals tied the school record for single game goals which had been set by Chari Christopher against Wagner (3/13/03) and Whitney Delgado against Cal State Bakersfield … Scored two or more goals in 18 games … Had a shooting percentage of .429 … Dished out 56 assists, #1 on the Matadors, fifth-best for a single season at CSUN … Dished out a season-high four assists against Bucknell (3/14/13), Concordia (3/19/13), at Hawai'I (4/13/13) and against UCSB (4/19/13) … Collected a season-high four steals against Princeton (3/6/13) … Has 162 career goals, tied for fourth-best in school history with Jessica Coy (2005-09) … Nelson's 147 assists are fourth-best in school history … Has attempted 420 shots in school history, third-best in school history … Only Chari Christopher (2003-05) and Whitney Delgado (2009-11) have more shooting attempts with 452 and 437, respectively … In 2013, had 162 shooting attempts, sixth-best for a single season in school history … Has a career shooting percentage of .386 (162-fo-420) sixth-best in school history.

Named an Honorable Mention All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for a second straight season … Also named First Team All-Big West Conference in addition to being named to the league's All-Academic team … Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) … Scored 50 goals, second-best on the Matadors and eleventh-best in the conference … Scored a season-high five goals against Occidental (3/2/13) … Scored two or more goals in 14 games … A shooting percentage of .355 … Collected 29 field blocks, second-best on the team … Collected three steals against UC San Diego (1/26/13), Concordia (2/2/13), Occidental (3/14/13), UC San Diego (3/16/13) and UCSB (4/19/13) … Collected three assists against Sonoma State (1/27/13), UC San Diego (2/10/13) and Indiana (3/17/13) … Has 115 career goals, tenth-best in school history … Has 308 shooting attempts in two seasons at CSUN, seventh-best in school history … Her 141 field goal attempts in 2013 was eleventh-best for a single season in CSUN history … A career shooting percentage of .373 (115-for-308) is ninth-best in school history.

Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) for a third straight season … Also named an All-Academic selection by the Big West Conference … Led the team in shooting percentage (.438, 35-for-80), seventh-best for a single season in school history … Scored 35 goals, fifth-best on the team … Scored a season-high three goals against Chapman (3/2/13).

#9 Leah Janke, Attacker, Senior, Canyon Lake, Ca.

Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) for a third straight season … Also named an All-Academic selection by the Big West Conference … Scored 24 goals with a .421 shooting percentage … Scored a season-high four goals against Pomona-Pitzer (1/27/13) … Scored three goals against UC San Diego (2/10/13) … Among the team leaders in assists (34) … Dished out a season-high four assists against Cal State San Bernardino (2/2/13) and Bucknell (3/14/13) … Had three assists against Pomona-Pitzer (1/27/13) and Concordia (2/2/13) … Collected three steals against Cal State Bakersfield (2/24/13) … Collected 125 assists, sixth-best in school history … Finished her career with 240 shooting attempts, tenth-best in school history.

#10 Katie Kammer, Attacker, Sophomore, Fullerton, Ca.

Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) for a second straight season … Named an All-Academic selection by the Big West Conference … Tallied 19 goals with a shooting percentage of .413 … Scored two goals in four games … Dished out a season-high four assists against Occidental (3/14/13).

#12 Taryn Kamimoto, Attacker, Freshman, Manhattan Beach, Ca.

Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) … Played in 14 games … Scored her first collegiate goal against Occidental (3/14/13) … Collected three assists and three steals against Occidental (3/14/13).

#13 Melissa Doll, Utility, Junior, Souderton, Pa.
Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) for a third straight season … Also named an All-Academic selection by the Big West Conference … Scored 26 goals along with 48 steals (#2 on the team) and 30 assists … Scored two goals against Cal State San Bernardino (2/2/13), Hartwick (2/9/13), Bucknell (3/14/13), Marist (3/19/13) and UC Santa Barbara (4/28/13) … Tallied a season-high five steals against Marist (3/19/13) … Has 103 career assists, ninth-best in school history … Her 125 career steals are tenth-best in school history … Her 247 field goal attempts is ninth-best in school history … A career field goal percentage of .381 (96-for-252) is seventh-best in school history … Has collected 103 assists in three seasons at CSUN, ninth-best in school history … Also has a 125 career steals, tenth-best in school history.

#18 Taitum Herrington, Attacker, Freshman, Lodi, Ca.

Voted an Academic All-American by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACPWC) … Played in all 35 games … Scored nine goals … Scored two goals against Loyola Marymount (2/23/13) … Collected three steals against Concordia (3/19/13).
