Northridge, Calif. – The 15th-ranked Cal State Northridge women's water polo team returns to the pool this weekend to compete in the Cal Lutheran Tournament in Thousand Oaks.
The Matadors will compete in two games on Saturday (3/2/13) against Occidental at 8:10 am followed by an 11:40 am contest against Chapman.
Then the Matadors will complete the day with a third game, this time at Matador Pool against the Brazilian National Team in a scrimmage. The game will start at 3:30 pm. Interested fans can attend. Admission is free.
CSUN begins conference play on Friday, March 8, against UC Davis. Game time is 2:00 pm. The following day, the Matadors host sixth-ranked San Diego State at Noon. Both games will be played at Matador Pool.
The Matadors are 10-5 following a 2-2 record at last weekend's UC Irvine Invitational.
Lindsy Nelson continues as the CSUN's top scorer. Her 30 goals are third-best in the Big West Conference behind Amber Pezzolla of San Diego State with 38 goals, and Samantha Murphy of UC Santa Barbara with 36 goals.
Kiernan Davis is fourth in the conference in goalie saves with 124 (8.16 spg). The league leader is Rachel Mitchell of San Diego State with 192 (12.80 spg).
CSUN's offense is second in the Big West Conference with 153 goals (10.20 gpg). UC Santa Barbara is #1 with 168 goals (9.33 gpg).
All eight water polo teams in the Big West Conference are nationally-ranked … That includes #6 San Diego State, #7 UC Irvine, #8 Hawaii, #9 Long Beach State, #14 UC Davis, #15 Cal State Northridge, #15 UC Santa Barbara and #20 Pacific … CSUN started the year ranked 16th in the nation followed by three straight weeks ranked 17th … For the last three weeks, CSUN has been ranked 15th nationally … UC Irvine will host this season's Big West Tournament on April 26-28.
