Santa Barbara, Ca. – Cal State Northridge, ranked 17th in the nation, recorded its first victory of the 2013 season with a 13-6 decision over 20th-ranked UC San Diego on Saturday night at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.
Cal State Northridge jumped to a 3-2 first period lead, and increased the advantage to 5-2 at halftime.
Earlier on Saturday, Cal State Northridge fell to fifth-ranked Arizona State in the 2013 season opener for the Matadors.
Jenny Jamison, CSUN's leading scorer last year with 68 goals, led a balanced attack for Cal State Northridge with two goals. Marisa Young, Lindsy Nelson, Molly Henehan and Hayley Gurriell each scored one goal for the Matadors.
The Sun Devils jumped to a 4-1 first period lead and increased the margin to four goals, 8-4, at halftime.
Alicia Brightwell led the Arizona State attack with six goals.
Cal State Northridge continues tournament play on Sunday with an 11:30 am game against Pomona-Pitzer, and then a 3:00 pm contest against Sonoma State.
