CSUN Water Polo Players Gain Post-Season Honors

Northridge, Calif. – Nine members of the Cal State Northridge water polo team have been honored by their coaches and their teammates for their successful efforts during the course of the 2012 season.

Matador Memo …
As a team, the Matadors finished the year with several accomplishments … That included two new school records … The Matadors collected 378 goals, breaking the old mark of 371 by the 2010 team … The 22 goals scored against La Verne (4/22/12) broke the previous record of 21 set earlier in the day against Cal State San Bernardino (4/22/12), and 20 goals against Pacific (4/15/07) … The Matadors finished the year ranked 17th in the country … CSUN beat two nationally-ranked teams in 2012 … The Matadors beat then sixth-ranked Hawaii (10-7, 2/25/12) and then 15th-ranked Hartwick (10-8, 2/11/12) … The victory over Hawaii is the highest-ranked team the Matadors have beaten in school history.

Melissa Doll – Sophomore, Attacker, Harleysville, Pa.

An Honorable Mention All-Big West selection in 2012 … Voted the Coaches Award … Tallied 36 goals in 2012, fourth-best on the Matadors … The team leader in assists (46), and second on the Matadors with 46 steals and field blocks (23) … Her 46 assists were only one short of the single season Top-10 at Cal State Northridge … Scored at least one goal in 25 games … Tallied a career-high four goals against La Verne (3/24/12) … Her shooting percentage of .434 (36-for-83) was third-best among the Matador regulars, and eighth-best for a single season in school history.

Kelcie Ferreira – Freshman, Center/Defender, Trinidad & Tobago

Led the team in steals (79), fourth-best for a single season in school history … Tallied 27 goals (#6 on the Matadors) … Scored a season-high three goals against Concordia-Irvine (3/2/12) and Brown (3/24/12) … Tallied two or more goals in seven games … Her shooting percentage of .429 (27-for-63) was third-best among the Matador regulars, and ninth-best for a single season in school history … Voted Co-Most Improved.

Jessica Goforth – Senior, Defender, Visalia, Ca.

Scored 15 goals, the second straight season she has scored in double-figures … Scored a season-high three goals against #15 UC Santa Barbara (1/12/12) … A shooting percentage of .441 (15-for-34) … Also tallied 25 steals and 12 assists in 39 games … Voted the Red Cape Award.

Dana Harvey – Senior, Goalkeeper, Auckland, New Zealand

Recorded 268 saves, seventh-best for a single season in school history … Her 8.79 saves per game average in 37 games was sixth-best in the Big West Conference … Recorded ten or more saves in six games including a season-high 14 saves in the season opener against Cal State Bakersfield (1/28/12) … Finished her two-year career with 470 saves, third-best in school history … Voted Most Inspirational Player.

Molly Henehan – Sophomore, Center, Corona, Ca.

Enjoyed her best season with 27 goals in 39 games … Chalked up a shooting percentage of .397 (27-for-68) … Scored a career-high three goals against Pomona-Pitzer (2/4/12) … Scored two goals in seven games … Fourth on the team in kickouts drawn (29) … Voted Co-Most Improved.

Jenny Jamison – Sophomore, Utility, Thousand Oaks, Ca.

First Team All-Big West Conference … Co-MVP (Offense) … Enjoyed an outstanding season in 2012 … The Big West scoring leader with 68 goals which is also fifth-best for a single season in Big West history … After only scoring eight goals in 2011, the sophomore responded with 68 goals in 2012, fourth-best for a single season in school history … Jamison's production helped the Matadors finish the year with a school record 378 goals, surpassing the old mark of 371 by the 2010 squad … Scored at least one goal in 32 of the 38 games she played … Scored a career-high five goals against Brown (3/24/12) … Compiled a shooting percentage of .428 (68-for-159), fifth-best among the Matador regulars, and tenth-best for a single season in school history … Tallied four goals in games against #10 Indiana (1/29/12), Cal State Monterey Bay (3/3/12), Bucknell (3/18/12) and La Verne (3/24/12) … Scored at least two goals in 19 games … Led the team in scoring in nine games … Shot the ball 159 times, second-best on the team and sixth-best for a single season in school history … Led the Matadors in penalty shots with 13 in 15 shot attempts … Dished out 40 assists (#3 on the team) in 2012 after tallying no assists the year before … Her 31 kick outs drawn was third-best on the Matadors.

Lindsy Nelson – Sophomore, Attacker, Murray, Ut.

Her 51 goals was second-best on the Matadors and fifth-best in the Big West Conference … Her two-season goal total is 92, and is nearing the Matador career Top-10 … Scored at least two goals in 13 games including a career-high five goals against Bucknell (3/13/12) and Cal State San Bernardino (4/22/12) … Produced a shooting percentage of .398 (51-for-128) … Second on the team in assists (42), only four behind team leader Melissa Doll … Third on the team in field blocks (22) and fourth on the team with 30 steals … Voted the Most Outstanding Performance Award.

Heidi Pettinger - Senior, Defender, Chino Hills, Ca.

First Team All-Big West Conference … Co-MVP (Defense) … Scored 29 goals along with a team-leading 29 field blocks, #2 in kick outs drawn (40), #3 in steals (44) and #6 in assists (30) … Scored a season-high three goals against then sixth-ranked Hawaii (2/25/12), Cal Baptist (4//12) and La Verne (4/22/12) … Finished her career with 132 goals (#6 in school history), 116 assists (#5 in school history), 143 steals (#6 in school history) and 136 kickouts drawn (#3 in school history).

Marisa Young - Freshman, Center, Fountain Valley, Ca.

The Big West Freshman of the Year, and Second Team All-Big West … Co-MVP (Offense) … Also voted CSUN Rookie of the Year … Definitely a rising star in water polo at Cal State Northridge … Became the first Matador in school history to claim Big West Freshman of the Year accolades … Finished third in the Big West Conference with 65 goals … Her 65 goals tied for the sixth-best total in CSUN history while qualifying her for ninth-most in Big West history … Compiled a .389 (65-for-167) shooting percentage … Young's production helped the Matadors finish the year with a school record 378 goals, surpassing the old mark of 371 by the 2010 squad … Attempted 167 shots, #1 on the team and fifth-best for a single season in school history … Led the team in kick outs drawn with 64 (#5 for a single season in school history) … Scored at least one goal in 28 of the 39 games played … Scored a career-high five goals against #13 Hartwick (2/4/12) … Scored at least two goals in 20 games … The team's leading scorer in nine games … Tallied four goals against Fresno Pacific (3/2/12), Occidental (3/13/12), Bucknell (3/18/12) and La Verne (4/22/12) … Scored three goals in four games.
