Davis, Calif. – Kelcie Ferreira scored the winning goal with 3:45 to play to lift 19th-ranked Cal State Northridge to a 6-5 victory over 15th-ranked UC Santa Barbara in the third place game at the Big West Tournament on a warm, sunny Sunday afternoon at the Ted & Rand Schaal Aquatics Center on the UC Davis campus.
The Matadors finished the three-day tournament with a 2-1 record.
The Gauchos had posted three earlier wins over the Matadors this year, but victory would be on CSUN's side this time. Six different Matador players each scored a goal.
The game was close from start-to-finish. Only one time during the game did either team hold more than a one-goal advantage. Marisa Young's two-meter goal with 2:01 remaining in the third period gave CSUN a 5-3 lead.
Back came UCSB with two goals at 1:44 and with 12 seconds remaining in the third period. That tied the game at 5-5 entering the final period.
Then heroics for Ferreira as she hit the winning goal, sending her shot just inside the opposite post and out of the reach of UCSB goalkeeper Ruth Milne.
UC Santa Barbara took three shots in the final minute but could not equalize the game. Senior goalkeeper Dana Harvey's stop of Shelby Haroldson's weak side shot with three seconds remaining preserved the victory for Cal State Northridge. Harvey finished with nine saves.
CSUN's defense held the Gauchos to only 5-of-31 shooting.
Katie Kammer proved to be a pivotal player for Cal State Northridge. Kammer hit an outside shot with 1:55 in the second quarter then assisted Lindsy Nelson on a goal to propel the Matadors to a 4-3 halftime lead.
Cal State Northridge finished the year 19-20. UCSB ended its season at 20-15.
Sixth-ranked UC Irvine (24-6) earned the league's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament (May 11-13 at San Diego State) with a 10-5 victory over tenth-ranked UC Davis (18-13) in Sunday's championship game. For the top seed Anteaters, it was their fourth straight Big West Tournament title. UC Davis had been the second seed in the Big West Tournament.
UCI's Jessy Cardey, with four goals in the championship game against UC Davis and seven goals in the tournament, was named the tournament MVP.
