#4 Seed Cal State Northridge Falls To #1 UC Irvine, 8-3

Davis, Calif. – The dream of a berth in the NCAA Tournament and a chance to compete for a national championship will have to wait another year for Cal State Northridge.

The Matadors had to win three games in three days at the Big West Championship (April 27-29) at UC Davis. A tough task, indeed, as the #4 seed.

Cal State Northridge disposed of fifth-seed Long Beach State on Friday, 7-5 in overtime, but on Saturday afternoon at UCD's Ted & Rand Schaal Aquatics Center, top-seed and sixth-ranked UC Irvine snuffed out CSUN's hopes with an 8-3 victory over Cal State Northridge in a semi-final conference tournament contest.

It was UCI's fourth victory over Cal State Northridge this year, and six straight wins over the past two years.

The Anteaters ended the suspense early against Cal State Northridge. UC Irvine scored three times in the first four minutes of the game before Lindsy Nelson notched her 50th score of the season at the 3:23 mark. UC Irvine then pushed the margin back to three goals (4-1) with another score at 1:39 of the first period.

UC Irvine converted on five 6-on-5 opportunities to push its season record to 23-6. The loss dropped CSUN's season record to 18-20.

Cal State Northridge will play its final game of the 2012 season on Sunday (April 29, 12:15 p.m.) against third-seed UC Santa Barbara. The Gauchos lost their semi-final game on Saturday against second-seed UC Davis, 7-5, in overtime.

UC Irvine, trying to win its fourth-straight Big West Tournament title, will face UC Davis in the championship game at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
