Northridge, Calif. – Cal State Northridge battled back from an early 5-1 deficit, took a 10-9 lead, but eventually fell to sixth-ranked UC Irvine, 11-10, in the Big West Conference opener for both teams on a drizzly Saturday at CSUN's Campus Pool.
The Matadors, ranked 17th in the nation, struck first. Kelcie Ferreira scored her 19th of the year at 7:26 of the first period to give CSUN a quick 1-0 lead.
But then UC Irvine, which had beaten CSUN two previous times earlier this year in non-league tournament play, took charge with five straight goals. That gave UC Irvine a 5-1 lead with 7:02 remaining in the second period.
UC Irvine then scored with only ten seconds on the clock by Jessy Cardy to take a 6-3 half time lead. For Cardey, it was her team-leading 54th goal of the year.
UC Irvine maintained its three-goal lead with 5:24 remaining in the third period at 7-4. That is when Cal State Northridge mounted a furious rally. The Matadors scored four of the game's next five goals to tie the contest at 8-8. Three of the four goals were scored by Jenny Jamison who tallied a game-high four goals to give her a team-leading 56 goals for the season, sixth-best for a single season in school history.
UCI jumped in front, 9-8, with 4:19 remaining in the game, CSUN's Lindsy Nelson tied the game at 9-9 with 4:04 remaining. Then Cal State Northridge went in front at 10-9 with 3:20 remaining in the game on a goal by Marisa Young.
But 16 seconds later, UCI's Danielle Warde scored her second goal of the game, and with only 41 seconds on the clock, Annika Bergesen added he game winner.
Cal State Northridge fell to 14-15 overall and 0-1 in Big West Conference play. UC Irvine increased its season record to 18-5 and 1-0 in conference play.
Sunday at Noon, Cal State Northridge hosts Long Beach in another conference game. Admission is free at Campus Pool.
