Youth Takes Hold On Matador Water Polo Team
Northridge, Calif. – A quick scan of the 2012 Cal State Northridge water polo statistics reveals a bright future for the nationally-ranked Matadors.
The team's top five scorers are ALL underclassmen. Freshman Marisa Young has emerged as the team leader in scoring with 44 goals. Her 44 goals is only nine short of the Matador single season Top-10 list. Chari Christopher (2003), Pam Barba (2004) and Sydney Sonoda (2011) each scored 53 goals during their respective seasons to rank in ninth place. Young has scored at least two goals in 14 of the team's 25 games. Young has tallied at least one goal in 18 of the team's 25 games. That includes five goals against #16 Hartwick, four goals each against Fresno Pacific, Occidental and Bucknell, and three goals each against eighth-ranked San Diego State, #14 UC Santa Barbara and a second game against Hartwick.
Four sophomores, Jenny Jamison, Lindsy Nelson, Melissa Doll and Molly Henehan have scored 42, 32, 18, and 16 goals, respectively. Young, Jamison, Nelson, Doll and Henehan, all underclassmen, have accounted for 120 of the team's 232 season goals (#7 for a single season in school history). That translates into 52 percent of the scoring load.
