#12 Cal State Northridge Travels To San Diego State Invitational

Northridge, Calif. – Back on the road. AGAIN !!!

The 12th-ranked Cal State Northridge water polo team has played 21 games this year, 19 on the road and two at home.

After a short two-game home stand with victories over Bucknell (14-4) and Occidental (19-6) on March 13, it is back on the road again as the Matadors travel south to play in the nine-team San Diego State Invitational (March 16-18).

The event will be played at the Aztec Aquaplex on the campus at San Diego State.

The games are pre-determined. The Matadors will open play on Saturday (3/17) at 11:45 a.m. against 18th-ranked Princeton, and again at 3:30 p.m. against Wagner. On Sunday (3/18), Cal State Northridge faces eighth-ranked San Diego State at 11:45 a.m., and Bucknell at 4:45 p.m.

Six of the nine teams at the San Diego State Invitational are nationally-ranked. They include eighth-ranked San Diego State, #11 Indiana, #12 Cal State Northridge, #14 Hawaii, #18 Princeton and #19 UC San Diego.

Over the past two months, Cal State Northridge has seen a dramatic rise in the national rankings. On Feb. 1, the Matadors were ranked 20th. In the weeks since Feb. 1, Cal State Northridge has jumped each week from 19th, to 17th, to 14th, to 13th and now to 12th, according to the latest CWPA national rankings, CSUN, winners of six straight, is now 10-11 overall.

CSUN's top four scorers are underclassmen and are enjoying exceptional seasons. Freshman Marisa Young has emerged as the team leader in scoring with 38 goals. Young has scored at least one goal in 16 of the team's 21 games. Young, who graduated from Fountain Valley High School, has scored at least two goals in 12 games. That includes five goals against #16 Hartwick, four goals each against Fresno Pacific and Occidental, and three goals against eighth-ranked San Diego State, #16 UC Santa Barbara and a second game against Hartwick.

Four sophomores, Jenny Jamison, Lindsy Nelson, Melissa Doll and Molly Henehan have scored 36, 27, 17 and 13 goals, respectively.

Together, Young, Jamison, Nelson, Doll and Henehan, all underclassmen, have accounted for 131 of the team's 202 goals.  

Dana Harvey, a senior, has collected 144 saves in 19 games this year. Harvey is averaging 9.03 saves per game.
