Santa Barbara, Ca. – Tenth-ranked Indiana jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first period and held on to defeat 19th-ranked Cal State Northridge, 8-7, during Sunday morning action at the UC Santa Barbara Water Polo Invitational.
Jakie Kohli was Indiana's chief offensive threat to open the game as she scored the Hoosiers first two goals at 5:19 and at 4:32. The Hoosiers followed up with two more goals to take a 4-0 lead with 3:05 left in the opening frame.
Marisa Young broke IU's scoring momentum when the freshman scored at 2:51 in the first period.
Neither team scored in the second period.
Trailing 6-1 with 2:52 remaining in the third period, Cal State Northridge caught momentum scoring five straight goals to tie the game at 6-6 with 4:02 remaining in the game. Four of CSUN's five goals were scored by Jenny Jamison, who on Saturday scored four goals in two games against Cal State Bakersfield and UC Santa Barbara. Jamison's fourth goal of the game tied the contest at 6-6.
However, back came the nationally-ranked Indiana Hoosiers. Two goals by Amanda Redfern at 2:37 and the insurance goal with 59 seconds remaining gave Indiana its fourth victory of the season in six games.
Cal State Northridge fell to 1-2.
The Matadors play Big West rival UC Irvine at 3:35 p.m. on Sunday. The Anteaters are currently ranked sixth in the country.
Jenny Jamison, a sophomore from Thousand Oaks, has emerged as CSUN's top scorer in three games this year … Jamison has scored eight goals in three games … Last year, Jamison scored eight goals in 22 games.
