#19 CSUN Suffers 9-6 Loss To #17 UC Santa Barbara

   Santa Barbara, Ca. – UC Santa Barbara, ranked 17th in the country, defeated Cal State Northridge, 9-6, during first day action on Saturday afternoon at the UCSB Invitational.

   Two goals in the first period by freshman Marisa Young gave the Matadors a 2-1 lead at the 5:35 mark. Two straight goals gave the Gauchos a 3-2 before Lindsy Nelson tied the game with 6:06 in the second period.

   UC Santa Barbara then scored two straight goals to give the Gauchos a 5-3 halftime lead.

   Young then cut the UCSB lead to one goal, 5-4, at the 7:47 mark of the third period. But the Gauchos scored three straight goals to make it 8-4 after the end of the third frame.

   Earlier in the day, the Matadors opened the year with a convincing 10-4 victory over Cal State Bakersfield in the opening round at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.

   Jenny Jamison and Leah Janke tallied three goals apiece. In all, six different CSUN players collected at least one goal.

   After holding a 2-0 lead after one goal thanks to goals by Janke at 6:47 and Jamison at 4:47, Cal State Northridge exploded for five goals in the second period to take a 7-2 halftime lead.

   Cal State Northridge outscored the Roadrunners, 3-2 in the second half, to take the final 10-4 advantage.

   On Sunday, the Matadors face tenth-ranked Indiana at 11:15 a.m. and sixth-ranked UC Irvine at 3:35 p.m.
