Matadors Wrap Up Conference Play With 3-1 Comeback Win at Cal State Fullerton
FULLERTON, Calif. - Matador freshman Alex Johnson and Brittany Williams combined for 33 kills as Cal State Northridge closed the Big West season with a come-from-behind 28-30, 34-32, 30-22, 30-18 win over Cal State Fullerton Thursday at Titan Gym.
With the win the Matadors snap a three-match skid and improve to 11-18 overall and close the Big West season at 7-9. The loss drops the Titans to 13-14 overall and 7-8 in conference play.
Johnson, who struggled to a .133 hitting clip, led the Matadors with 17 kills and also added 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. Williams registered 16 kills (.180) while sophomore Angela Hupp also reached double figures with 10 kills. Hupp completed her conference-leading fifth triple-double by adding 11 assists and 14 digs and junior Kayla Wright tallied her eighth double-double this season with 35 assists and a career-high 24 digs.
As a team, the Matadors hit just .135 (60-32-207) but that was enough to defeat the Titans who hit .065 (54-40-215). Northridge also had 102 digs to 90 for Fullerton.
Cal State Northridge closes the regular season with the sixth annual Fremont Investment and Loan Invitational which gets underway Friday, Nov. 23. The host Matadors will take on Fairfield at 7 p.m. preceded by Cal State Fullerton and Idaho at 5 p.m. Saturday's final day of action has Fullerton taking on Fairfield at 5 p.m. followed by the Matadors and Idaho at 7 p.m.
