UC Davis Defeats Matadors in Four Games, 24-30, 30-27, 30-25, 31-29

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Freshman Brittany Williams led three Cal State Northridge hitter in double figures with 17 kills but the Matadors dropped a four-set decision (24-30, 30-27, 30-25, 31-29) to the visiting UC Davis Aggies Saturday in The Matadome.

With the win, the Aggies snap a 19-match losing streak and improve to 4-23 overall and 1-14 in the Big West. The loss is Northridge's third straight as the Matadors drop to 10-18 overall and 6-9 in conference play.

Williams hit .256 on her way to 17 kills while fellow freshman Alex Johnson (.220) added 12 kills and junior Val Kepler (.280) chipped in 10. Junior Kayla Wright posted a double-double with 16 assists and 13 digs and also matched her career-high with four aces.

For UC Davis, Erin Turner and Britt Erickson each tallied a match-high 18 kills with Erickson hitting .310 and Turner hitting .089. Kayla Varney added 17 kills while hitting .122. Turner and Varney also notched double figures in digs with 20 and 18 respectively. Aggie libero Avreeta Singh notch a match-high 22 digs.

Williams led the Matadors with six kills in game one as the Matadors used a 4-0 run at 11-11 to gain the upper hand. The Northridge lead grew to as many as nine (26-19) following a Johnson kill and the Matadors took the game 30-24.

Northridge looked to build on the momentum as they jumped out to a 10-4 lead after the first 14 points of game two. The Matadors also led by six at 15-9 following a Williams kill but the Aggies battled back to knot the score at 17-17 after a 7-2 run. The lead changed hands twice more before a Williams attack error gave UC Davis a 21-20 lead the Aggies would never surrender. Davis built the lead to six (28-22) after an Erickson kill and evened the match following the 30-27 win.

The Aggies took game three from start to finish as the Matadors could manage just two ties in the entire frame. UC Davis took its biggest lead at 28-20 after Harmony Burdine hit out and Northridge saved three game points before falling 30-25.

In the decisive game four, both teams played evenly until 23-23 when Kelley Hanson hit long and Carson Lowden and Kelly Patterson teamed up to block Angela Hupp giving UCD a 25-23 lead. The Matadors battled back to knot the score at 28-28 and then 29-29 but back-to-back kills from Patterson and Erickson gave the Aggies the victory 31-29.

Cal State Northridge wraps up Big West regular season play next Thursday, Nov. 15 as the Matadors head to Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m.
