Matadors Fall in Three Games at No. 20 Cal Poly
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Junior Val Kepler had a team-high nine kills and hit .400 but Cal State Northridge dropped a three-set decision (30-23, 30-22, 30-18) at 20th-ranked Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon at Mott Gym.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the Big West. The loss drops the Matadors to 4-10 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The loss also wraps up a school-record 14-match road trip to open the season for Northridge.
The Matadors, who hit .108 as team were led Kepler's nine kills. Freshman Alex Johnson added eight kills (.115) for Northridge which also got 16 assists, seven kills and five digs from Angela Hupp.
For Cal Poly, Kylie Atherstone led a trio if hitters in double figures with 13 kills (.250). Ali Waller added 11 kills (.194) and Gaby Rivera chipped in 10 (.562).
Cal Poly hit .372 as a team and out-blocked Northridge 14.0 to 4.5. The Mustangs also had six aces to the Matadors' one.
Cal State Northridge opens the home schedule next Friday, Sept. 28 as the Matadors host UC Irvine at 7 p.m.
