Sacramento State Defeats Matadors 30-20, 30-9, 29-31, 30-20
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State tallied 24.5 team blocks, including 13 from Lindsay Haupt, 10 from Michelle Franz and nine from both Jennifer Ferguson and Rose Burke, on the way to a 3-1 (30-20, 30-9, 29-31, 30-20) victory over Cal State Northridge in the third and final round of the Sacramento State Volleyball Invitational Saturday evening at the Hornets Nest.
With the victory, Sacramento State (8-3 overall) concluded the tournament with a 2-1 record, including a three-game sweep of Manhattan earlier today and a five-game loss to eventual tournament champion Oregon State yesterday. The Beavers won all three of their matches to claim the tournament championship, and improved to 6-3 overall. The Hornets were the tournament runner-ups, followed by Cal State Northridge (1-2) and Manhattan (0-3).
Sacramento State's all-tournament selections included seniors Haupt and Missie Stidham. Haupt averaged 3.67 kills and 1.67 blocks per game while hitting .333 (44-14-90). That included tonight's match where she had 13 blocks, matching her career high and tying the school record for a four-game match. Stidham averaged 3.83 kills, 4.83 digs and 1.08 service aces per game. The high flying outside hitter tallied 13 aces over the three matches, including a school-record tying seven in this morning's victory over Manhattan.
In tonight's match, the Hornets' 24.5 team blocks were just a half block shy of the school record for a four-game match (25.0), set against Nevada on Sept. 22, 1993. Ferguson missed her first career triple-double by one block as the senior outside hitter finished with 14 kills, 20 digs and nine blocks. Haupt matched her season high with 17 kills to go along with a .452 hitting percentage (17-3-31) and 13 blocks. The double-double was her second in the last four matches, and she now has recorded double figures in kills in every match this year.
Franz had a monster night, matching her career high in both kills (16) and hitting percentage (.636, 16-2-22) to go along with a season high 10 blocks. Stidham added a match-best 19 kills and 15 digs. Burke, who is in her third season as the team's setter, finished with 52 assists and a career-high nine blocks.
Sacramento State limited Cal State Northridge to a miniscule .108 hitting percentage and finished with 71 digs. The team also had seven service aces and has combined for 29 over its last three matches.
Cal State Northridge was led by Angela Hupp's 12 kills and Amy Hultner's 21 digs.
Sacramento State returns to action next week when it travels west to take part in the USF Invitational in San Francisco, Calif. The Hornets will face tournament host San Francisco on Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m., and both 17th-ranked Cal Poly (1 p.m.) and Xavier (5 p.m.) on Saturday, Sept. 15.
