Johnson's 11 Kills Not Enough as Matadors Fall to No. 14 Duke
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Freshman Alex Johnson had a team-high 11 kills and Angela Hupp had seven kills, 10 digs and 16 assists but Cal State Northridge could not overcome No. 14 Duke as the Matadors fell 30-23, 30-28, 30-21 to wrap up the USC Classic at the Galen Center.
With the win, the Blue Devils improve to 5-1 while the Matadors drop to 2-4.
Although she led the team in kills, Johnson struggled in the match with 11 kills and eight errors in 38 swings for an .079 hitting clip. Johnson also contributed an ace and three digs. Hupp added seven kills (.294) but no other Matador hitter registered more than five kills. Kayla Wright posted 12 assists and six digs and Amy Hultner chipped in 14 digs in the loss.
Rachael Moss led a trio of Duke hitters in double figures with 13 kills (.276). Carrie DeMange added 12 kills (.226) and Sue Carls chipped in 10 kills (.429). Moss also posted a match-high 15 digs to complete the double-double.
The Blue Devils wound up out-hitting the Matadors, .290 (51-15-124) to .127 (36-21-118) and had a slight 7.0 to 5.0 edge in team blocks.
Cal State Northridge continues its road tournament schedule next week as the Matadors travel to Sacramento to take on Manhattan, Oregon State and Sacramento State in the Sacramento State Invitational.
