IRVINE, Calif. - Cal State Northridge dropped its final road match of the 2010 season in straight sets (25-23, 25-21, 26-24) Saturday at UC Irvine. Sophomore Monica McFarland had a team-high 11 kills to lead the Matadors.

The Matadors (12-18, 4-10 Big West) were looking for their first season sweep over the Anteaters since 2001, but instead were swept for the second time in three nights. CSUN also fell in three sets at Long Beach State on Thursday. With the win, UC Irvine improves to 7-20 overall and 3-11 in conference play.

McFarland paced the Matadors with 11 kills while hitting .273. For the sophomore, who also had eight digs, 11 kills marked her highest total since also putting down 11 against Cal Poly on Sept. 25. Junior Una Siljegovic added six kills (.037) while senior Lynda Morales finished with a team-high six blocks.

The Matadors were limited to an .069 (30-22-116) hitting clip while UCI hit .134 (40-24-119).

CSUN used a 4-0 run midway through the opening set to take a 16-12 lead before the Anteaters responded with a three-point run to cut the lead to 18-16. The Matador lead was one (20-19) after a Morales hitting error before UCI eventually tied the score at 23-23. Then two straight Anteater points courtesy of a kill and an ace gave UCI set one by a 25-23 margin.

The Anteaters jumped out to an 11-7 lead in set two before the Matadors battled back to within one (14-13) following a McFarland kill. But UCI scored six unanswered points to break open the set 20-13 before the Matadors rallied behind a 7-1 run to narrow the gap to 21-20. Following three straight UCI points, Siljegovic's attempt went long and the Anteaters took a two set lead.

In the final set, CSUN led by as many as three points on a pair of occasions, the last at 17-14 following a pair of Anteater attack errors. UCI would eventually tie the set at 21-21 and then again at 24-24 after a Larissa Nordyke kill. Pauline Acres and Fleming paired up to block Siljegovic on the ensuing play and Kari Pestolesi ended the match with her 12th kill of the match.

In addition to Pestolesi's match-high 12 kills, Juliane Piggott added 10 and Kristin Winkler had a match-high 17 digs.

Cal State Northridge returns home for its final two matches of the 2010 season as the Matadors host Long Beach State on Friday, Nov. 19 and Cal State Fullerton Saturday, Nov. 20.
