Oct. 24, 2009

Final Stats

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Senior Angela Hupp put down a match-high 12 kills but visiting UC Davis came into The Matadome and dealt Cal State Northridge a 26-24, 25-19, 25-17 loss in Big West Conference action on Saturday.

Hupp led the Matadors (7-15, 3-6 Big West) with 12 kills (.207) and was the only Northridge hitter to register double figures. The Matador offense suffered with the absence of outside hitter Britney Graff who missed the match with an injury suffered against Pacific on Friday.

Junior Lynda Morales notched eight kills (.200) and fellow junior Brittany Williams chipped in seven (.130). Libero Monica McFarland, who had 15 digs through two sets, wound up with a match-high 16 and setter Sam Orlandini posted 25 assists and five digs in the loss.

The Aggies (16-7, 7-2 Big West) were paced by Betsy Sedlak's 10 kills while a trio of UC Davis hitters added nine kills apiece.

A Hupp kill gave the Matadors their largest lead of 10-6 early in set one. But the Aggies answered with four straight points to knot the score at 10-10. Janet Alvarado's kill gave the Matadors a two-point cushion at 13-11 but another four-point Davis run erased the lead. The Aggies held the lead until Northridge drew even at 24-24 after Orlandini and Tela Burnett teamed up to block Allison Whitson. But a Sedlak kill on the ensuing point followed by a block on Hupp put UC Davis up one set to none.

The final two sets were tight eerly only to see the Aggies pull away at the mid-point. Wuth Northridge holding a slim 10-9 lead in the second set, UCD rolled off four straight to take the lead for good at 13-10. The Matadors managed to pull within one twice, the last at 17-16, before the Aggies outscored Northridge 7-2 over the next nine points open up an insurmountable 24-18 lead.

A 7-1 run with the scored tied 10-10 in the third set sent UC Davis on its way. The Matadors managed to get within 18-14 on a Chelsea Johnson solo block but that was as close as Northridge would get and UC Davis got an ace from Kayla Varney on match point.

Cal State Northridge returns to action next Friday, Oct. 30 as the Matadors host CSU Bakersfield in a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
